Common Problems
Every symptom covered on this site, grouped by appliance. Pick the one that matches what your appliance is actually doing.
Dryers
- Dryer Runs but Never Gets Hot: Narrowing It Down The drum turns and the timer counts down, but nothing warms up. That combination rules out half the machine straight away — here is what is left.
- Dryer Squealing or Grinding: What the Noise Tells You Drum rollers, the idler pulley and worn bearings each make a different sound. What you hear, and when, narrows it down before anything is opened up.
- Why Your Dryer Needs Two Cycles to Dry One Load Heat is present, clothes still come out damp, everything takes twice as long. That points at moisture leaving the machine, not at the heater itself.
- Dryer Will Not Start: Splitting the Problem in Two Whether the control panel lights up decides which half of the machine to investigate. That single observation eliminates most of the possibilities.
Washers
- Washing Machine Leaking: Locating It by Where the Water Appears Front, back or underneath tells you which system is leaking. Timing during the cycle narrows it further, often before you move the machine at all.
- Washer Shakes, Bangs and Walks Across the Floor Violent movement during spin has three usual explanations, and two of them cost nothing to fix. The third is worth catching before it damages the machine.
- Water Left in the Washer: Finding What Is Blocking It Standing water at the end of a cycle is nearly always an obstruction, not a failed pump. The drain filter is the first place to look.
- Clothes Come Out Soaked: Why the Spin Never Happened A spin cycle that never ran leaves a load dripping. Balance and drainage explain most cases, and both are things you can settle in a couple of minutes.
Refrigerators
- Refrigerator Freezing Food It Should Only Be Chilling Lettuce turning to ice means too much cold is reaching the fresh food side, or the appliance is misreading its own temperature.
- Ice Maker Stopped Producing: Water, Temperature or a Jam An ice maker needs three things to work. Establishing which one is missing takes a few minutes and avoids replacing a module that was never faulty.
- Water Under the Crisper Drawers and Other Fridge Leaks Refrigerators produce water on purpose. A leak means that water found a different route, and where it appears identifies which route it took.
- Refrigerator Warm but Running: Start With the Freezer Whether the freezer is still cold splits this diagnosis in half. Cold freezer with a warm fridge means airflow; both warm means something else entirely.
Dishwashers
- Dishwasher Leaving Dishes Dirty or Gritty Poor cleaning is usually water not reaching the dishes rather than a weak detergent. Spray arms, the filter and loading account for nearly all of it.
- Dishwasher Standing in Water at the End of a Cycle The filter, the drain hose and the disposal connection explain nearly every dishwasher that will not empty, including one easily missed installation mistake.
Ranges & Ovens
- Oven Baking Unevenly: Calibration, Racks and Bakeware One side browns faster, cakes come out lopsided, or bases burn while tops stay pale. Most of this is not a fault, and a cheap thermometer settles which part is.
- Oven Will Not Heat at All: Electric and Gas An oven that stays cold while its display works points at the heating circuit, not the controls. Electric and gas models fail in different ways.
